#10 The 3-Step Pyramid: How to Find Your Target Audience Without Wasting Your Time & Efforts
(I wish I found these hacks 2 years ago!)
Find your target audience
Align your niche with them
Create content
And nothing can stop you from growing as a creator
Do you agree with this 4-step framework? (Drop your thoughts!)
When it comes to building an audience online, finding your clan is a must!
Why?
Because — when you don’t know who you’re creating for, you end up creating random stuff.
And, when that happens, you miss the mark entirely.
Your content lacks direction, and so does your growth.
Not only that, but you’ll find yourself taking double the time (if not more) to get from Point A to B.
Feels a bit daunting?
It is daunting actually!
But! But! But!
No worries, your go-to-helper aka me😉 is here to help you find your target audience.
What do you need to do?
Grab your favorite coffee, take a back seat, and learn the 3 hacks that I’ll be sharing.
Let’s begin!
1. Act Like a Fisherman
For some time, imagine you’re a fisherman trying to catch the right fish.
How will you do it?
You won’t just toss any bait into the water, hoping for random bites.
You’ll choose the right spot, the right bait, and most importantly, the right fish you’re trying to catch.
Finding your target audience works the same way.
Start by choosing the right spot, meaning — the platform where you will start creating content.
It could be Medium, LinkedIn, Twitter, Reddit, Quora, Pinterest or your personal website.
Also, find the right bait meaning —the type of content you would like to create.
short-form
long-form
educational
personal, etc.
Then, figure out what kind of ‘fish’ (audience) you’re after.
What do they like?
What do they care about?
Where do they hang out online?
Once you know this, you can adjust your content to be more appealing to them.
Here’s a visual version of this hack for better clarity!
2. Use the 3C Formula
The 3C formula stands for Clarity, Consistency, and Connections.
Let me break it down:
Clarity: First be clear about ‘who’ you’re creating for.
Are you targeting:
— aspiring entrepreneurs
— content creators
— homemakers
— graphic designers
— or perhaps video editors?
Having that mental clarity will help you create more personalized content.
Make sure your content speaks directly to your specified target audience.
To do this, avoid vague language.
Be as simple and as clear as possible.
Also, be specific in addressing their challenges, interests, and goals.
Consistency: Being consistent helps you the most when it comes to attracting the right audience.
Post consistently on the platforms that your potential audience uses.
This will help you give a practical analysis of which content piece your target audience likes and which they don’t find useful.
Pay close attention to your analytics.
Check which content piece or type gets the maximum or least attention.
Create a doc where you save these feedback insights.
Then, double down on what’s working.
Don’t forget to make an organized content plan.
It not only saves you a lot of time but also a ton of effort.
You can use Notion, Google Docs, or even a notebook to do that.
I personally use Notion to do this.
Connections: Connections are a must in this virtual world!
The more people you can connect with, the more you’ll grow.
So, focus on building a genuine connection with your audience, even if you’ve only 10, 50, or 100 people in your clan.
The numbers will grow if you stay consistent.
Interact with them through comments, direct messages, or even community groups.
By listening to their feedback and incorporating it into your content, you’ll create a deeper bond with your audience.
For example:
I recently changed my branding and introduced a new carousel style for LinkedIn.
Naturally, I had some doubts:
— would people like it?
— would it resonate with my audience?
Then, a fellow creator left a comment about the carousel and shared her feedback.
You also need to do the same:
Create what you can to the best of your ability, put your work in public, gather constructive feedback, and implement it!
3. Learn From The Pros
People who’re ahead of you or as they say your ‘competitors’ are an absolute goldmine for you.
Don’t think of them as your enemies — think of them as teachers.
They can show you a lot about finding your audience, especially if they’re successful.
But remember —
The goal isn’t to copy them, it’s to learn from them and then do your own thing even better.
Start by making a list of creators that are similar to yours but more successful.
Look at their work closely.
— What topics do they cover?
— How do they create content?
— What seems to get the most engagement from their audience?
Pay attention to the comments and shares, these can tell you what the audience really cares about.
Now, look at where these successful creators are active.
—Are they big on Medium, Substack, Twitter, or LinkedIn?
—Do they have a popular group or community?
This can give you clues about where your potential audience hangs out.
You might even consider reaching out to these creators for advice or collaboration — many are happy to help newcomers.
But make sure: you’re not copying anyone!
