You’ve to write more if you:
want to attract more people
make more money
grow your personal brand
Heard this advice?
You must have — once in a while!
I personally believe that you should write as much as you can. The reason:
Writing is like a muscle — the more you use it, the stronger it gets.
But, let’s be real — not everyone has endless hours to become a writing machine.
Right?
I mean how can you spend 4–5 hours if you’ve got a 9–5, a family, or a million other things on your plate?
You can!
Trust me — you can.
All you need to do is work a bit smarter and use some hacks (No, I’m not saying to put hard work in the back seat!)
What are those hacks?
Read this post and you’ll get the answer.
Let’s begin!
1. Picture it Before you Pen it
This is all about imagining.
Before you start writing, take a few minutes to imagine what you want your finished piece to look like.
What’s the main point you want to make?
What are the sub-topics that you want to cover?
What kind of feeling do you want your readers to have when they’re done?
Create an outline or rough draft based on that.
Once you have a rough draft, then start writing.
It will help you create a mental picture of your writing piece, and consequently, you’ll write faster because you're not constantly stopping to figure out where you're going next.
2. Don’t Stop at Every Junction
Let’s imagine a situation:
Suppose you’re driving through a city to reach a certain destination.
If you stop at every single junction, would you be able to reach your destination on time?
NO.
The same goes for writing.
If you keep hitting the brakes to edit every little sentence or fix every typo, you’ll lose your momentum.
This journey will take twice as long, and you’ll end up frustrated.
Instead, let your ideas flow freely, and save the editing for when you’ve reached the end of the road.
3. Steal With a Twist
I’ve read a book called ‘Steal Like an Artist’ by Austin Kleon (If you haven’t read it, please do that!)
This idea is derived from that book.
Explore as much writing content as you can, jot down what caught your attention, and then write it with your own twist.
Don’t copy someone else’s work word by word.
That’s a big no-no.
Just take inspiration!
Let’s say you read a great blog post about healthy eating.
You could take that idea and write about healthy eating for:
busy parents
or, on a budget
or, for picky eaters
This hack saves you time because you’re not starting from scratch.
4. Create a PWR
PWR stands for Personal Writing Ritual.
It can be anything that helps you shift gears from your everyday hustle into writing mode.
Maybe it’s brewing your favorite coffee, putting on a specific playlist, or doing anything else that just gives you a clue.
The whole point of creating this PWR is to create a habit that tells your brain:
“Hey, it’s time to write!”
I write in the morning. That’s my PWR.
Find your PWR, whether it’s early morning, late at night, or during a coffee break, and make that your writing time.
Over time you’ll train yourself to slip into that creative mindset faster, helping you write with more focus and flow every time.
5. Suck your Power Hours
We all have some hours in the day when we’re at our absolute best.
These hours are called power hours.
During these hours we are naturally most productive.
Not only this, if we write during these hours we are more prone to experience a state of flow.
So, figure out your power hours (it could be in the morning, afternoon, or at night) and suck every bit of energy from them.
6. Make Your Place Comfortable
Your writing space matters more than you might think.
Seriously!
If you’re uncomfortable or distracted, you’ll waste time fidgeting or daydreaming instead of writing.
To avoid that — find a comfortable space.
A comfortable space means you can write for longer without getting tired or annoyed.
The longer you can write in one go, the more you’ll get done.
This doesn’t mean you need a fancy office.
Your comfy space can be a corner on your kitchen table or a chair in your bedroom.
What matters is that it feels good to you and helps you focus.
7. Be Your Own Boss
In a typical corporate scenario — your boss gives you orders and you make sure that you complete those orders on time.
Now, when it comes to writing, you need to be that boss for yourself!
Set clear goals and deadlines, and hold yourself accountable just like you would in a job.
Give yourself tasks like:
write 500 words by noon
finish this draft by Friday
And, treat them with the same urgency as if your boss was checking in.
Pro Tip: Don’t act like a cranky boss! If you’re really stuck, take a short walk or do something else for a bit. Sometimes stepping away is the fastest way to get unstuck.
